Isme Azam: Meaning, Arabic, Dua, Benefits & How to Read
Isme Azam: Meaning, Arabic, Dua, Benefits & How to Read
Isme Azam means the Greatest Name of Allah. The Quran teaches believers to call upon Allah through His beautiful names, while several Hadith reports describe particular supplications as invoking Allah by His Greatest Name.
Allah says:
“Allah has the Most Beautiful Names. So call upon Allah using them.” — Surah Al-A’raf 7:180.
Scholars have differed about the exact identification of the Greatest Name. The Hadith evidence also contains more than one supplication connected with Isme Azam. Therefore, these reports should be presented without claiming that only one formula is clearly the Isme Azam.
What Does Isme Azam Mean?
Isme Azam (اسم الله الأعظم) means:
“The Greatest Name of Allah.”
Roman English: Ismullāhil-Aʿẓam
The subject is closely connected with dua. In one Hadith, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ heard a man supplicating with the names Allah, Al-Ahad, and As-Samad and said that the man had asked Allah by His Greatest Name.
Isme Azam Dua in Arabic
A well-known supplication in this discussion is:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِأَنِّي أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ أَنْتَ اللَّهُ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ الأَحَدُ الصَّمَدُ الَّذِي لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ
Roman English
Allahumma innī as’aluka bi-annī ashhadu annaka antallāh, lā ilāha illā anta, al-Aḥadus-Ṣamad, alladhī lam yalid wa lam yūlad, wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan aḥad.
English Meaning
O Allah, I ask You because I bear witness that You are Allah. There is no deity worthy of worship except You, the One, the Self-Sufficient. You neither beget nor are begotten, and there is none comparable to You.
The related report in Sunan Ibn Majah 3857 states that the man had asked Allah by His Greatest Name, by which Allah gives when He is asked and answers when He is called upon.
Al-Ahad and As-Samad
Two important names in this supplication are Al-Ahad and As-Samad.
Al-Ahad (الأحد) means the One.
As-Samad (الصمد) is translated as the Self-Sufficient Master.
The supplication also contains:
الَّذِي لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ
Alladhī lam yalid wa lam yūlad
“Who neither begets nor is begotten.”
And:
Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan aḥad
“And there is none comparable to Him.”
Another Isme Azam Dua: Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum
Another important report appears in Sunan an-Nasa’i 1300:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِأَنَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدَ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ الْمَنَّانُ بَدِيعُ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ يَا ذَا الْجَلاَلِ وَالإِكْرَامِ يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّومُ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ
Roman English
Allahumma innī as’aluka bi-anna lakal-ḥamd, lā ilāha illā anta, al-Mannān, Badīʿus-samāwāti wal-arḍ, yā Dhal-Jalāli wal-Ikrām, yā Ḥayyu yā Qayyūm, innī as’aluka.
English Meaning
O Allah, I ask You because all praise belongs to You. There is no deity worthy of worship except You, the Bestower, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor. O Ever-Living, O Sustainer, I ask You.
The Prophet ﷺ described this supplication as calling upon Allah by His Greatest Name.
Al-Hayy means the Ever-Living, while Al-Qayyum refers to Allah as the Sustainer.
Isme Azam and the Quran
The Quran teaches believers to call upon Allah through His beautiful names:
وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْأَسْمَاءُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ فَٱدْعُوهُ بِهَا
“Allah has the Most Beautiful Names. So call upon Him by them.”
This is Surah Al-A’raf 7:180.
The verse provides an important Quranic foundation for making dua through Allah’s names. The Hadith reports then provide examples of supplications described as invoking Allah by His Greatest Name.
What Is Ibn Majah 3856?
Ibn Majah 3856 should not be confused with Ibn Majah 3857.
Ibn Majah 3856 contains a report stating that the Greatest Name of Allah is found in three surahs:
-
Al-Baqarah
Al ‘Imran
Ta-Ha
The report is graded Hasan on the cited Sunnah.com page.
By contrast, Ibn Majah 3857 contains the supplication with Allah, Al-Ahad, and As-Samad and states that the man asked Allah by His Greatest Name.
This distinction is important when citing the Isme Azam Hadith.
Is There Only One Isme Azam?
Scholars have held different views about the Greatest Name of Allah. Some views identify Allah as the Greatest Name, while others point to names such as Al-Hayy Al-Qayyum.
The Hadith evidence also contains more than one supplication described as invoking Allah by the Greatest Name.
Therefore, it is more accurate to present the documented reports and scholarly views rather than claim that only one phrase is clearly Isme Azam.
Is There a Fixed Number for Isme Azam?
The Hadiths discussed here do not give a fixed repetition number for these supplications.
Therefore, numbers such as 7, 11, 41, 100, or 313 should not be presented as requirements based on these Hadiths.
The cited sources also do not establish a fixed number of days for an Isme Azam wazifa.
Isme Azam for Hajat
Many people search for Isme Azam for Hajat when looking for a supplication for an important need.
The Quran says:
“Allah has the Most Beautiful Names. So call upon Him by them.”
The Hadiths discussed above provide examples of supplications that the Prophet ﷺ described as invoking Allah by His Greatest Name.
However, these sources do not establish a separate fixed Isme Azam Hajat wazifa with a required number of repetitions, a set number of days, or a guaranteed result.
Isme Azam Benefits
The Hadiths establish the connection of these supplications with Allah’s Greatest Name.
In Ibn Majah 3857, the Prophet ﷺ stated that the man had asked Allah by His Greatest Name, by which Allah gives when asked and answers when called upon.
In Nasa’i 1300, the supplication containing Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum is also described as invoking Allah by His Greatest Name.
The cited sources do not establish guaranteed worldly results such as wealth, exam success, visa approval, marriage, or success in a legal case. Such claims should not be presented as established benefits of Isme Azam.
Conclusion
Isme Azam means the Greatest Name of Allah. The Quran teaches believers to call upon Allah through His Most Beautiful Names, while Hadith reports identify particular supplications as invoking Allah by His Greatest Name.
Ibn Majah 3857 contains the supplication with Allah, Al-Ahad, and As-Samad. Ibn Majah 3856 contains a different report concerning the Greatest Name and three surahs. Sunan an-Nasa’i 1300 contains another supplication with Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum.
For an evidence-based explanation, these reports should be presented without adding unsupported fixed numbers, special routines, or guaranteed worldly outcomes.
